National Native Group Says “Every Native Vote Must Be Counted”
New York, NY — The nation’s leading Native advocacy group, Native Organizers Alliance Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) partner to Native Organizers Alliance, responds to the ongoing vote count in the 2024 election. The following statement from Judith LeBlanc (Caddo), executive director of Native Organizers Alliance Action Fund, can be quoted in-full or in-part.
“Every Native vote must be counted. For decades, we have fought for our right to vote. We continue to battle against voter suppression to ensure that our people have access to voting stations and that voter registration laws take into account unique challenges in Indian Country.
We have fought hard to be heard, and it is essential to upholding our democracy that all of our votes be counted.
The Native electorate is a powerful voting bloc and will continue to grow in its ability to influence policy decisions, create a more inclusive democracy, and fight systemic injustices. But we also know that the election is just one part of our democracy.
We will need to continue to grow an organized and politically-empowered grassroots movement to meet the challenges of today. The majority of those who live on these lands agree that climate change, economic security, and a strong democracy are important. As Native peoples, we have always had a special relationship with these core issues, and we will continue to organize a powerful grassroots movement to protect our lands, our cultures, and our rights—no matter who is elected.”
