Native Organizers Alliance Action Fund is proud to see that Deb Haaland continues to make history with her Democratic primary win in the New Mexico gubernatorial race. She is the first Native American woman to win the nomination for governor in the state, following her many successes as the first Native woman to serve in a cabinet position. We couldn’t ask for better representation in government.

Deb is committed to the issues that deeply affect everyone. She is the right leader to tackle the issues that deeply impact all who live across the country, including the climate crisis, rising costs, and health disparities. We aren’t surprised that the people of New Mexico are responding to her quietly powerful way of uniting communities, and her commitment to helping all New Mexicans, not just the wealthiest 1%, live, work, and raise their families. Deb’s style of ethical leadership is exactly what we need in this current political climate.

During her tenure as Secretary of Interior, we saw the incredible impact that having Native representation at one of the highest levels of government can have. Under her leadership, we saw greater protections for the places we hold most sacred; heard an apology from the President for the harms caused by federal boarding schools; and saw a stronger Tribal-federal partnership, as federal agencies were ordered to do more to uphold tribal sovereignty and strengthen the tribal consultation process to ensure that all development on our land has tribal input and guidance.

Women have always been strong leaders in our Indigenous communities. As a strong, Native woman, Deb is walking a path set by our ancestors. Native Organizers Alliance Action Fund is proud to see Deb Haaland move closer to victory in New Mexico’s race for Governor.
